A pollo Tyres needed a strong IT infrastructure to support its growing
business across the world. They had to add to the datacenter assets to meet the
global demand. If the organization had approached the conventional way of adding
additional servers to their datacenter, then that would have meant an increase
in space and utilities requirements. Also the administration and backup become a
serious concern for such a large setup. Adding to that, there was no guarantee
that the server resource would be used optimally. Keeping all these points in
mind, the organization decided to go for virtualization.
As part of the project implementation, the company replaced their existing
standalone servers, PDU, Server Network Switches with single set of blade server
infrastructure to cater to their entire existing needs. And for future
requirements, a new server blade could be added to the blade infrastructure
without any concern of additional space. As applications were now run on
virtualized platform, it required replacement of running business supporting
infrastructure to the new one. The application migration was planned and
achieved in a manner to minimize the business downtown. Post implementation, the
company is saving on software licenses, space and utilities consumption. The
manpower requirement to manage the datacenter setup has come down by almost a
third, and the space requirement for the new infrastructure is reduced to almost
a fourth of what was being used by traditional hardware. With approximately 30
to 40% power saving, and low emission of radiations, the project supports the
environmental needs as well.
