Although Apple's iPhone 15 series is still relatively new, rumours about the future generation of iPhones are circulating. The iPhone 16 series is set to be released next year and is believed to have significant advancements. These include more prominent displays, enhanced cameras, solid-state buttons, and other features. According to recent leaks and rumours, the top four changes predicted to stand out in the future of new Apple iPhones (presumably the iPhone 16 series) are as follows.

Design

Apple is rumoured to introduce a stacked design in the forthcoming iPhone 16 Pro models to improve light collection capabilities and expand the dynamic range, potentially improving Night Mode performance. This design tweak is projected to slightly increase the thickness of the iPhone 16 Pro models.

Aside from the stacked design, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumoured to have larger displays, with the former sporting a 6.3-inch panel and the latter sporting a 6.9-inch display. As a result, both models' dimensions will increase, making them taller and wider than their predecessors, the iPhone 15 Pro models.

Apple is rumoured to put a graphene thermal system inside the iPhone 16 models to alleviate overheating problems. Furthermore, the iPhone 16 Pro variants may use a metal battery shell for better heat dissipation.

Meanwhile, speculations say that the iPhone 16 will include an additional capacitive button known as the "Capture Button," which will be on the same side as the Power button. According to reports, Apple intends to reposition the mmWave cutout to fit this button, which can detect pressure and touch and provide haptic feedback. While the Capture Button's purpose is uncertain, it adds a new aspect to the iPhone's UI.

Display

The iPhone 16 Pro models will likely have larger displays than its predecessors. The iPhone 16 Pro is said to have a 6.3-inch screen, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max is said to have a 6.9-inch screen. On the contrary, the basic iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are expected to retain their predecessors' exact 6.7-inch display sizes.

Apple is also developing a new display technology that could replace blue fluorescent with blue phosphorescence to improve power efficiency. However, whether this technology will be ready for iPhone 16 is still being determined.

Camera

The iPhone 16 Pro is believed to use the same 5x zoom tetraprism camera currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max for photographs and movies. Aside from the new telescopic camera, the iPhone 16 Pro is said to employ a new Sony sensor for the primary camera. While the specifics of this sensor remain unknown, it is believed to improve low-light photography significantly.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max also has a new "periscope ultra-long telephoto camera" that will extend optical zoom capabilities even further. This technology could enable a considerably more extensive zoom range, capturing extraordinary detail of distant subjects.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to improve their ultra-wide cameras majorly. The present 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera will be replaced by a 48-megapixel sensor, which should significantly increase low-light performance and overall image quality.

The iPhone 16 lineup is likely to gain from advancements in camera software and computational photography, in addition to the specific camera changes noted above. These improvements may result in higher image quality, lower-light performance, and more advanced capabilities such as Portrait Mode and Night Mode.

Battery

According to reports, Apple is planning to improve the iPhone 16 Pro's battery life significantly. The business will likely debut a new metal battery housing for the iPhone 16 Pro, providing better heat dissipation than the typical foil casing of prior models. This modification may increase battery life, let the iPhone 16 Pro run at higher performance settings for extended periods, and alleviate the overheating issues plaguing the iPhone 15 Pro.

A graphene cooling system is rumoured to be integrated into the iPhone 16 Pro and the new metal battery housing. Graphene has a high thermal conductivity, which means it can easily transfer heat away from the battery. This could extend battery life and reduce overheating.

Finally, the iPhone 16 Pro is said to use a novel stacked battery architecture. This architecture could result in quicker charging speeds, with cable charging potentially reaching 40W and MagSafe charging potentially reaching 20W. However, this rumour has not been confirmed and should be handled with caution.

Aside from that, Apple is rumoured to depart from its A17 Pro processor approach for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. Instead of using the A17 Pro processor in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple employs a less expensive N3E process for the ordinary "A17" chip. This new chip is supposedly in development and will be available in September 2024.

While these details are speculative and should be handled cautiously until the iPhone 16 series is released, the iPhone 16 series is expected to be a significant upgrade over the previous iPhone 15 series.
