Along with storage, backup also received a fillip, this year, given the concerns surrounding disaster recovery and business continuity planning. Legal requirements, for maintaining a backup, also boosted the general push for the backup solutions market.

Till last year we had a category called Tape Backup. This year, we have gone beyond it, to include the entire gamut of backup solutions, including software and disk-to-disk solutions. Given the push in the market, current ownership is still at 60% of those polled, and 34%, including from those who own, plan to buy and implement a large volume backup solution in the immediate future.

The winner in this category is HP, which got its nod from across the spectrum. In terms of verticals, HP got its maximum push from government departments and research bodies. The major reason given for choosing HP was that the voters had used and were satisfied with HP’s backup solution.

The runner-up in this category is IBM with a UPI of 32% followed by Iomega and Sony with a UPI of 5 each. IBM got the maximum of its votes from the North zone, and was preferred by companies with an IT spend of over

Rs 25 lakh. Of the verticals, IBM was favored by government departments, research bodies, software, banking and finance.

People voted for IBM because they think it is a good-quality product besides being a well-known brand.

They have also used it and were satisfied with its’ performance.

An interesting aside: Quite a few respondents have voted for Compaq. This is true not only in this category, but also in a few others. We have combined all votes for Compaq with those polled by HP this year. But the fact remains that two years after the company merged with HP, the brand remains very strong. And that is further borne out by the fact that HP is still pushing quite a few Compaq brands.
