New Update

The Brother MFC-7420 is a multifunction device with a monochrome laser

printer, a color scanner, a copier and a fax built in. It comes with 16 MB

onboard memory and is meant for small and medium sized offices. It can print at

resolutions of 2400, 1200 and 600 dpi, which are good for image printing; and

300 dpi, which is good for text documents. It has a max resolution of 2400x600.

The printer has both, USB 2.0 and parallel port interfaces. In our printing

tests it achieved its rated print speed of 20 ppm even with 1200 dpi resolution.

The 600x300 dpi color scanner on testing for a full-page color image and text

document took 35 secs at 300 dpi and 3 min 45 secs at 600 dpi.

The unit can store up to 400 transmitted and received faxes. It has a

security setup to lock the transmission. Plus it can store up to 208 speed dial

locations for easy dialing. We found that it took around 8 seconds for a text

doc to be faxed. The copier can resize the output from 25% to 400%. It comes

bundled with OmniPage OCR software for converting text images into editable

documents. You also have the PC Fax utility to fax directly from your PC. Its

copier took 9 secs for an image and 7 secs for a document to be copied. The MFD

can be connected to the network as well, but requires an optional Ethernet Print

Server that comes at a price of USD 179.

Bottom Line: Overall, it's a decent MFD, but if we compare it

against the HP 3055, we find that the latter supports higher print and scan

resolutions and costs only around 2K more. Another plus point of the HP MFD is

the built-in Ethernet port,

allowing it to be directly connected to the network.
