The Processor: Choosing a processor totally depends on the work you are going to do, if your work involves more of 'content creation' (such as running heavy applications) and lots of multitasking, you should be looking for a notebook with an Intel Core or an AMD Athlon processor. While the Intel Core i3/i5 processors are sufficient for most office applications, the Core i7 caters best to your heavy application usage.

Memory: One very important aspect to look out for in a notebook is how much memory (RAM) it has and what the graphic capabilities are. If you are a light user and use few applications and software then you should be comfortable with 2GB of RAM. However, most notebooks now come with a minimum 3GB RAM if you spend over Rs 35000. Whereas if you use applications like 3D MAX or play graphic hungry games then go for a notebook with 4GB of RAM.

Graphics: Graphics has now taken up a significant factor in performance of a notebook. With HD content and graphic intensive user interfaces, the GPU plays a significant part in a notebook. If you don't need image editing or gaming then we suggest a notebook with Intel on board graphics.

You should look for laptops with at least 320GB storage space. To enhance the performance and power backup of your laptop, you can look for Solid state drive instead of conventional hard disk drive.

Portability: Notebooks are meant to be portable. If you are a frequent traveler then you would need an extremely lightweight notebook which can be carried around easily. There are a variety of netbooks that weigh from 1.5 kg onwards depending on the screen size. In case you want a laptop for home use, then the weight factor is not of importance and you can go for a heavier notebook. These notebooks usually have a larger screen and better multimedia capabilities, but suffer from poor battery life.

Almost all laptops now come with Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth 3.0 integrated. However, when it comes to ports you need to be careful. You should give preference to a laptop having USB 3.0 as USB 2.0 is a feature of past now. The notebook should have audio in/out jacks, ethernet port, DVD RW, card reader as well as a display out port.
