The Problem: RBI has set guidelines for Co-operatives Banks (both state and central) to migrate to a centralized Core Banking Solution by 2014 as part of the Financial Inclusion program of the Ministry of Finance. As a result, NABARD has been given the responsibility of executing this ambitious strategy. One of the biggest challenges for enabling this is to setup a communications infrastructure, because the rural and remote landscapes of the country still lack a terrestrial networking infrastructure. NABARD Commissioned C-EDGE Technologies for the job, which further used the services of Hughes Communications India Ltd to setup a VSAT network for connecting all the remote branches.
The Solution: VSAT connectivity has been enabled at 3300 locations across 7 states of the country. As the terrain was difficult at many locations, no single Wired or Wireless technology was feasible, VSAT was used as the primary media with PAN India coverage. Wireless CDMA was used as backup. For security, IPSec was used over the link end to end.
The Result: The cost per remote location was optimized by introducing branch server at each remote location. The Customer Premise equipment (CPE) which was used for providing primary & secondary links were powered to enable IPSEC tunnels which saved the organization the cost of a router at each remote location. There was 5% saving due to higher uptime.
