The new Power Shot SX240HS is a travel zoom point-and-shoot with 20x optical zoom, 25mm wide angle lens with 12mp and 10.3fps. It is slightly bigger than usual point-n-shoot cameras and has a plastic body with metallic edges which gives it a robust feel, yet weighs just 220gms. The camera has matte finish with a grip on the front making it secure while using. It has a bright 3 inch widescreen display with 461k dots.

Including several image shooting modes and video recording, it has 9 modes overall. The video recording is great with sharp visuals in 1080p HD. The image quality is equally good and crisp. The red eye correction works well under flashlight, unlike previous PowerShot models. The pop-up flash doesn’t start on switching on the camera, but has a flash button in the control panel. However, its placement is a little weird as it always runs into one or the other finger holding the camera.

The camera’s most exciting part is its super zoom which goes up to 20x and clicks far-off objects well with its 25mm frame. Buttons are smooth and highly responsive. The battery is exceedingly good and long lasting, even though it is just an 11mah. A 2-3 hours charge gives more than 300 clicks. It has HDMI out and tripod slot. It features DIGIC 5 powered HS system and intelligent IS technology for controlling optimal image stabilization. As a result it is fast right from the start-up. Panasonic TZ30 is another good super-zoom camera with 20x optical zoom and a touchscreen which costs the same -Rs 19,995.

Bottomline: Sx240HS has missed out built-in GPS, which is available in Canon SX260HS, a 20x zoom point-and-shoot priced at 22k.
