Chennai Port-Vehicle Tracking System

PCQ Bureau
New Update

This is an RFID enabled vehicle authentication and tracking system, which has

been successfully piloted at Chennai port. There are some 12 gates at the port

and vehicles obtain passes from port.office for gaining access to port

warehouses through gates. There are different types of passes including

temporary ones for each day and long term ones like monthly passes apart from

port's own vehicles which require access forever. Every time a vehicle enters

and exits through gates, the security personnel at the gate checks the pass and

its validity, opens the gate manually and logs the time.

In the new system, all vehicles shall carry an RFID tag which is put on to the
windshield of the vehicle. Whenever the tagged vehicle approaches the gates, the

tag is read, its validity is checked. If it's a valid vehicle, RFID reader sends

out a signal to the electronic boom barrier and the gate opens automatically.

Log of this transaction is also maintained. Same is repeated during the exit of

any vehicle.

Apart from time and effort saving, accuracy of the information is guaranteed.

The implementers told that selecting the equipment, positioning them and

controlling the reading range were some of the key challenges faced by them.

Project Specs
Business problem: So little time with the

security personnel to authenticate an entry at a gate-chances of human

errors.

IT solution: The system authenticates the vehicles and

keeps tracks of them.

Impact: Happy security personnel, as the system has taken away the

major burden off their head. Happy management as they get the accurate

information.
