Should I go with a Canon or a Sony camcorder?

Both brands are approximately the same, it depends on your requirements to choose the best one for you. The higher priced Sony camcorders have a built-in infrared emitter, but none of the Canon camcorders do - so if your definition of “better” includes having the ability to shoot monochrome video under zero visible light conditions, then Sony is “better”. As for build quality, both are great, lenses are fine, imaging chips are similar... assuming of course, the camcorders are in the same price range.
