Simply speaking, sealed headphones are noise isolating headphones and will immune you to the outside environment. This means that they tend to keep the sound between the headphones and the listener and thus are better suited for private listening. Open headphones, on the other hand, allow outside sound to be heard by the headphone wearer. The downside to open headphones is that they leak sound. This makes them a poor solution for traveling.
