The Linux Live distros have always been a great help for users who want to give Linux a try without installing it on their machines. But these live distros used to have a drawback, as they were meant only for CDs/DVDs, and hence were read-only in nature. It was impossible to modify, update or install anything in those distros later. But finally the issue of getting persistent data in such distros has been resolved. Today we have Live USB distros on which you can easily update, install or add/remove new files.

Direct Hit!

Now, let's see how you can create one such LiveUSB drive with Fedora 9. To do the same, you have to first download the software called Live USB creator from the link given in the 'Direct Hit' box. This is essentially a zipped Windows application. Download and extract it with your favorite unzipping tool. Here's how you can do the same.

Once it is extracted, run the executable file called liveUSB-creator.exe. But If you run it from Vista, run it with administrator privileges else your USB will not become bootable The application will look like this . Here, you have to see if your USB drive is detected with the application or not. If not, you can click on 'Refresh' to detect it

Select the Fedora version for your Live USB. Click on 'Browse' and select a pre-downloaded Fedora Live ISO or select Fedora Live CD ISO from the drop down menu to download Select the amount of free persistent drive space for your USB drive adjusting the 'Scroll' button. The max value here is 2GB. Now click on 'Create Live USB' to initiate the creation process
