New Update

We reviewed version 4.2.4 of this FTP utility, which has a simple interface and a built-in connection wizard and works on PCs with Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000, with 16 MB RAM and a Net connection. You can try the version on this month’s CD, or download it from www.cuteftp.com. Log-in can be anonymous or username based. The main screen has four windows–two for drag ‘n’ drop file transfers between your local directory to your FTP server, one that shows the FTP commands, and another the download status.

CUTE FTP 4.2.4

Price: $39.95

Meant for: Web developers, download freaks

Features: Auto reconnect/resume, MP3 search

It has a list of searchable FTP servers to which you can add more. It also has an MP3 and file search that searches external search engines like MusicSeek and AstraWeb. Another option, Smart Get, searches FTP servers for a file you want to download, and if it’s not able to get through one server, it moves to another and continues the process till the file is fully downloaded. If you’re downloading files from multiple FTP servers, then each session is in a separate window; you have to shift between them to keep track of files, which can get confusing.

When we tested it, file transfer from one remote server to another happened smoothly and efficiently.

Overall, a nifty utility, though a little expensive compared to similar products.
