This internal modem is based on the Motorola SM 56 PCI chipset. It supports both V.90 and K56 Flex standards for 56 kbps connectivity. The modem is compact and gets detected by Win 98. Installation is therefore hassle free. Besides this, it has drivers for Win 95 and NT.
We tested the modem by connecting it to the Net through a MantraOnline account. It took 11 to 14 seconds to handshake before it finally got connected. This is quite a long time compared to some other modems that we’ve tested. We also checked the modem for connect durations by trying it on two different telephone lines. We recommend that you try out the modem on your telephone line before buying it. For example, this modem gave steady connects on one line but dropped carrier every few minutes on another.

Internal modem. Rs 1,875 Features: 56 kbps; plug-n-play; V.90 ready. Pros: Download speed between 3.97 to 2.43 kbps. Cons: Performance depends on your telephone line; long handshakes. Source: Aditya Promoters |
Finally, we tested the modem for throughputs. For this, we connected it to an FTP site on the Internet and tried downloading a file. It gave download speeds between 2.43 and 3.97 kbps. The wide variation is because download speeds aren’t dependent on a modem alone.
The modem comes with a CD containing BitWare and tons of other software like MediaRing Talk 99, Real Player, Net2Phone, etc. It also has connectors for a microphone and speakers that let you use it as a voice-mail system.
It works very well and both recording and playback quality are pretty good. You don’t need an extra sound card for it. However, you’ll have to buy the microphone and speakers separately. For its price, this modem is a good buy.
