WD my Passport 1 Tb

Western Digital (WD) launched its upgraded external drives named My Passport and for a drive with 1 TB storage support to be priced at less than Rs 6,000 it has to be one of the top contenders when it comes to buying an external drive. It weighs 134 grams, making it one of the lightest external drives in the segment. WD My Passport is slim and comes with a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port and an LED indicator light on the right. The drive gets its power from the USB 3.0 port, which means that no external power source is required.

Seagate Backup Plus 1 Tb

Backup Plus offers higher speed capability, social features and a better user interface. In terms of real time data transfer speed and benchmarks, the drive is at par with most of the hard drives (see table) that cost less than Rs 6,000. The most interesting part about the drive is its integration with social networking sites, which enables the user to save pictures from Facebook and Flickr among others directly on the drive. The Backup Plus however is not the most durable and one must use it with care. Overall, the drive is portable, offers decent output, small form factor and easy to use as well. The USB 3.0 cable in-the-box is slightly short and could be a hindrance while working on a desktop.

Transcend StoreJet 25m3 500 gb

This external HDD from Transcend may not be the best looking, but it has a rugged casing, making it a good choice for rough usage. The greyish green colored drive comes with a USB 2.0/3.0 interface and sports the smaller form factor of 2.5 inches, which makes it easy to carry around. In terms of features you get One Touch back-up facility that enables you to use the drive as a separate entity when connected to a system. The drive delivers transfer speeds that are acceptable for this price and the overall package makes it a value-for-money product that offers moderate (not so fast) transfer speeds.

Buffalo MiniStation 1 Tb

The MiniStation comes with an aluminium chassis and a classy matt black finish. For a drive so small, it feels rather sturdy with no major shortcomings. The drive has a simple and clean body with just the USB 3.0 port and an indicator light hogging the space on the body. At 140grams, the drive is quite light which makes it easy to carry and overall, the drive is capable of handling daily rough and tough usage. As you can see from the transfer speeds (see table), it is purely meant for users who require an external storage drive for its sheer capacity and not so much for its speed.
