Bangalore,India: Ever wanted to find out which of your friends likes Lady Gaga? or which of them support Manchester United? This can be done easily with

facebook's graph search, which provides a tool to search the world's richest source of social media data. Currently, the feature is being rolled out

slowly, initially being offered to a selected set of users. Users will be able to ask queries such as “Pictures of me before 2005” or “Restaurants my

friends like” or “people who like rock music”, and facebook will return a set of results. These results will include people on your friends list, as well

as others who are connected through your network and have their “likes” visible to other people. While it currently does not mine facebook statuses, with

engineers specialized in natural language processing, it won't be long before the graph search becomes even more advanced. However, there are concerns

among facebook users about privacy with the inclusion of this new feature. For example, others who are not your friends may be able to search your “likes”

because they are set to being visible, and with the high granularity of privacy settings on Facebook, it can be annoying for users to sift through

micro-settings for every component they wish to share/unshare. Graph search can also reveal disturbing and unwanted details about millions of people across

the world. For example, a tumblr website(http://actualfacebookgraphsearches.tumblr.com/) is

now uploading results of “undesirable” search queries which can result in defamation of organizations and people. It is unclear what kind of effect graph

search will have, as its power is limited by the amount of content shared by people. If users feel their privacy is threatened and decide to curb

visibility of all their content, it may be far less useful than what it's touted to be.
