The Problem: GITAM University at Visakhapatnam wanted to deploy a state-of-the-art network infrastructure on their campus. This was required so that they could deploy new technologies like SaaS based applications, which can be provisioned to affiliated colleges and universities. By doing so, GITAM wanted to foster a better learning environment for all students.

The Solution: A single converged IP network capable of running internal applications and providing Wi-Fi across the campus was implemented with the help of Cisco. The campus-wide network was on 1 Gigabit fiber backbone connected with 300 network switches. Wi-Fi was provided and secured with ACS integrated with Microsoft Active Directory, and capable of supporting void, audio and data.

A Cisco 7206 router was deployed to handle BGP protocol and an ASA 5550 ensured that up to 1 Gbps of traffic could flow through the firewall. A data center with application hosting was built to facilitate long distance education as well.

The Result: Cost savings of up to 80% have been seen with this new infrastructure. Time taken to deploy new applications has been reduced by 90% because applications are hosted as services in the cloud. The utilization of physical resources has increased dramatically, and user experience has also improved. With a university cloud available, various departments have used virtualized servers for their requirements, and this has reduced costs for additional physical machines.
