With over 500 million Android devices in the market, Google Play is a crucial venue through which developers build apps to reach their target audience. Currently, Google Play supports publishing of free apps by developers in the Indian market.

However, there was previously no support for publishing of paid apps by Indian developers, due to several restrictions in regulations and rules. NDTV reported

previously that Google would allow Indian developers to publish paid apps in the app market, as Google listed India amongst countries supported for publishing of paid apps.

To clarify the situation, we talked to Dhawan, to get their side of things. When asked whether Google is supporting paid apps in India, Dhawan said, “No, Google is currently not supporting paid app publishing in India. We have no further comments right now”. This may be of some disappointment to mobile development firms in India, who have till now been relying on in-app advertising to earn revenue for their apps on the Google Play Store. Indian mobile development firms and independent developers are eagerly awaiting to publish paid apps in Google Play, as it provides strong incentive to build quality applications and increase revenue for themselves.
