According to a recent announcement from Google, the business will begin expanding in India and Japan before delivering its generative AI search experience to other nations. First announced at this year's Google I/O developer conference in May, SGE introduces a chat mode to Google Search, where you can ask Google about a topic and then respond as an AI chat. In recent months, the company has updated its experience with video and image support, local information and travel recommendations, and new tools that provide summaries, definitions and more help with coding questions.

Integrating Ads with Artificial Intelligence

It also began experimenting with ads that integrate with AI-generated responses to take advantage of new real estate dedicated to the AI conversational experience. With global expansion, SGE is tailored to precisely support regions.

Generative AI tool in local languages

In Japan, users can access the generative AI in their local language, while in India, it supports both English and Hindi with a language switch that allows users to switch between the two. It also adds voice input – popular in India – so users can speak out questions instead of typing and then listen to answers. In both countries, search ads will continue to appear in separate ad slots on the page. Along with these releases, SGE is introducing a new feature designed to make it easier for people to find and visit websites that store information provided in AI responses.

Starting today, users will see a new clickable arrow next to information in the AI-powered overview to view relevant web pages. This gives them direct access to the AI data source where they can learn more about the answers to their questions. It will be launched in the US first and will come to India and Japan in the coming weeks. The company noted that since the release of SGE, the feature has been found to be more popular with younger users.

According to Google, the highest satisfaction scores are among 18–24-year-olds who want to ask questions in a more conversational way. Google also said people liked the ability to ask follow-up questions and said they now ask longer, more conversational questions in full sentences. It's a different experience than traditional Google searches, where users simply enter a few keywords to start a query.
