The M1005 is a personal mono laser MFP with printing, copying and scanning
functions. A highlight of this product is that for a multi-page document, it
provides sequential printouts utilizing both sides of a sheet. Its flat bed
scanner scans upto A4 size docs, at an optical scanning resolution of 1200 dpi,
which is the best in its class. In our tests, M1005 provided 14ppm for printing
multiple copies of a text-intensive doc at 600 dpi, same as the rated speed. But
while taking multiple copies of the same doc at the same resolution, it could
not maintain such efficiency, ending up at 11ppm. This is 3 lower than the rated
speed. It comes bundled with Readiris Pro OCR software that provides, amongst
other things, details such as how long it took to scan and at what resolution.
The scanner took 17 secs to scan both an A4 text intensive color document and a
full color photograph at 300 dpi resolution. This reduces to 11 secs at the same
resolution for B/W documents. Its OCR utility took approximately 37 secs to
convert an image to an editable document at 300dpi. Though the printing quality
is good and is readable up to font size 4 easily, the contrast settings are by
default too dark and need adjustment each time you put in a separate page to
copy. Moreover, the LCD display is very diminutive and you really have to strain
your eyes just to read it.
Bottom Line: Overall, a good device for individual use with quite a
few convenient features.
