Indian General News Site

New Update

The Times group seems to hold monopoly in this category. Ever since we've introduced this category in 2000, it's either been timesofindia.com or indiatimes.com that's been winning. This time, it's indiatimes.com that has taken away the crown. NDTV has constantly been improving its index. It grew from 22 to 79 last year, and this year it has moved up further to 83. To add fuel to the fire, Rediff has also improved its index significantly, moving from just 20 last year to a whopping 79 this time. If this growth pace continues for these two, we seriously wonder whether the Times monopoly will be there next year. Another interesting thing to note here is that the news sites category isn't dominated by any one type of News Company. The winner has both print and online presence, the runner-up is largely TV and then online, while the third one is purely online. It was a rather crowded market last year, with ten contenders making it to the club. This year, we have only five, and there's a distinct difference in their indices distribution. The first three are above 70, while the last two are in the 30s. Google news enjoyed the third position last time, but has slipped down to finish last this year. Yahoo continues to hold its fourth position for the second year. None of the top three players enjoy equal readership across the country. Each is strong in certain particular regions and weak in others. Indiatimes enjoys maximum support in the North and West, but needs to improve in East and South. NDTV is fairly strong in the East, average in North and South, but needs to improve in the West. Rediff was strongest down South and West, but needs to improve in the North and East.
