PCQLinux 2006 has latest KDE and GNOME desktop environments
included (Lite and XtraLite use
EDE
). Both these environments have improved their aesthetics considerably
over previous versions. By default PCQLinux 2006 give you GNOME desktop, you can
change in KDE if you want using the switch desktop item on your menu.
KDE 3.5
This version of KDE 3.5 is fast and takes less time to start up compared to
its earlier versions. Other enhancements in KDE 3.5 include RSS feeds support in
kmail, and you can now configure Kwallet without a password.
Kpersonalizer has built-in accessibility options, some
specific Logitech mouse features have been added and konqueror support the
middle mouse button for scrolling. You can also drag and drop icons between
panels. KDE has added a new reboot option and kscreensaver has autolock
functionality. Wallpapers in KDE can now be SVG files, and you have lot of new
downloadable emoticons for kopte and kmail.
If you have configured Wine on your PCQLinux 2006 desktop,
then KDE creates menu items for all installed Windows applications in the KDE
menu. There is another tool in KDE called kNetAttach, which is very helpful.
This allows you to connect to a windows share with out
needing to out long mount commands. Kmoney keeps all your money related
trisection on your desktop itself and reminds you when and whom you will have to
make payment or you have to receive payments. With this version KDE you can
share(Samba or NFS) any folder by simply right-clicking the folder.
GNOME 2.12
GNOME is based on GTK+2.8, which gives you excellent graphics, smoother
edges, RGBA translucency and better looking, more flexible themeing. This
version of GNOME has a new clipboard management, which allows objects to be in
the clipboard beyond the lifetime of an application. This means you can cut or
copy an object and exit the application, and the object will be remain there
until you replace it.
GNOME 2.12 now has better hardware compatibility and it has
enhanced integration with the HAL(Hardware Abstraction Layer), giving you a
visual representation of hardware such as CDROM, firewire and MMC card reader,
connected to your PCQLinux machines.
In GNOME Nautilus is the default file manager, which show
files and folders in spatial tree view and allows you to bookmark your files and
folders. It also include a new "Send to..." feature for transferring
documents, photos, music, etc. via Email, Bluetooth or Instant Messaging.
For mail GNOME has Evolution. The new Evolution also has a
plugins available to support for PGP mail encryption. GNOME System Tools include
a tool to configure your startup services and also gives you the ability to
start and stop services.
Like in KDE, in Gnome also, you can share a folder by just
right-clicking the folder and from the context menu select “Sharing”. It
will open a list of platforms on which you want to share.
