Lenovo confirms Moto Z2 Play smartphone

Lenovo, the parent company of Motorola, has confirmed the much-speculated Moto Z2 Play smartphone. The company revealed the smartphone while replying to a user query on microblogging website Twitter. The Chinese smartphone brand even shared battery capacity details of the upcoming smartphone.

In a tweet, Lenovo confirmed that Moto Z2 Play will be featuring a non-removable 3,000mAh battery, something that also falls in line with the previous rumours. The handle in later tweets also posted its forum links on why a non-removable battery in smartphones is better.

It might come as a disappointment for some fans that its predecessor and the current model Moto Z Play comes with a larger 3510mAh battery. However, the real-world usage of the Moto Z2 Play in terms of battery life could be better. We can be only sure once the smartphone has been tested.

For now, there is no other word on the smartphone or its specifics. Lenovo has also not yet revealed the launch dates of the handset. But similar to last year, the company may unveil the smartphone during its IFA conference, which is scheduled to take place in Berlin from September 1 to September 6 this year. We could also see it’s unveiling during the Lenovo Tech World Show.

A recent report by Venturebeat says the Moto Z2 Play will run Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box and will be thinner than its predecessor. The Moto Z Play itself is around 7mm thin. The slimness could understandably mean a lesser capacity battery life, what Lenovo confirmed above in one of the tweets.

The report adds further that while the Z Play is almost 7mm thick and weighs 165 gram, the upcoming Z2 Play will be a millimetre thin and 20 gram lighter. The device could sport the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 processor, which is a minor upgrade over the Z Play’s Snapdragon 625. In addition, the 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) resolution could stay.

As for the camera, the report suggests Motorola to keep the 5MP front-facing camera from the Z Play but make some changes in the rear camera. The Z2 Play’s rear camera could see a dip in the megapixel count but an upgrade in image quality. The Z Play’s 16MP camera with f/2.0 aperture can be replaced with a 12MP f/1.7 camera with dual-pixel autofocus. For those unaware, the dual-pixel autofocus smartphone camera technology was introduced by Samsung in its Galaxy S7 smartphones last year.

The Moto Z2 Play is said to come in Lunar Gray and Fine Gold colour variants and will be one of the three devices in the refreshed Z2 lineup. The other two handsets are Moto Z2 and Moto Z2 Force.
