SP5002 IP Telephony Gateway 



This is a VoIP gateway for small setups, which provides voice and fax services over IP. It acts as a gateway between an IP-based LAN and regular analog phones or fax devices. The gateway has two Ethernet ports, two RJ11 FXS (Foreign Exchange Station) ports and an RS232 console port. It can be configured to work in both gatekeeper and peer-to-peer modes. In the former, it connects to a gatekeeper device wherein a VoIP account with an ISP is required. This allows one to make phone calls over the Internet.

For the other setup, connect it to your local PBX, analog phone or fax machine through the two FXS ports. Next, connect it to your LAN or directly connect IP phones to its RJ45 Ethernet ports. It has an address book where you can map IP addresses to phone numbers. Thus, voice communication is possible between two IP devices or between an IP device and

analog phone. You can even use software like MS NetMeeting to call an IP or analog phone. The gateway supports H.323 v3 protocol, standard in most VoIP devices these days. On a 10 Mbps LAN, voice quality between any two phones does not suffer. 

The gateway is configured either through Telnet or by connecting an RS232 cable. Unfortunately, there’s no Web-based configuration and the entire configuration is command- line based, making it time consuming and slightly difficult.

This gateway is advantageous in long-distance communication. For instance, if you have two offices in different cities connected with a leased circuit for

datacom, you could connect these devices at either end, and perform voice communication over the same WAN link.

SP5001 IP Phone



This is a sleek IP phone having two 10/100 Ethernet ports, one connected to your network and the other to a PC. This allows both the PC and phone to connect to a single Ethernet port on network. It has an RJ11 port for connecting to a regular analog phone line, and supports H.323 standard and MS NetMeeting for communication with a PC. It has a phonebook to add IP addresses and map them to phone numbers. It has ten speed dial buttons for single touch dialing and other features like speaker phone and messages as well. Using this phone is simple, and it can be configured either from its keypad, LCD display or telnet. Can be used with both peer-to-peer and gatekeeper modes, and requires a separate power supply. However, IP phones are costlier than conventional phones.
