This comes hot on the heels of reports that Apple and Samsung are planning a smart watch as well. Earlier this year, there were reports that Apple had been in talks with Taiwanese company Foxconn to produce cut glass watches that will have a customized version of iOS running on them. In March, Samsung's executive vice president of mobile also told Bloomberg that they have been working on a watch product for "so long", and patents have been filed by Samsung on watch-related items. For the Apple smart watch, it seems that features like detecting incoming calls and messages, checking map coordinates and sensor monitors to check conditions such as heart rate and so on.

However, the introduction of a smart watch will not be something revolutionary to the market. Sony has already released the "SmartWatch", which can sync with an Android device to perform many functions. When any call, message or notification is received by your Android smartphone, the watch will vibrate and display the message. While the watch itself cannot be used to respond to messages or make calls, it provides a subtle and discreet way to be notified of important events, especially in noisy and busy places. Another option available is the Pebble watch, which works via bluetooth with Android and iOS devices. There are also an increasing number of apps that can be installed on the device, such as a GPS meter or a music remote control. Using e-paper technology, the watchfaces can be customized according to your mood, and all software updates are pushed wirelessly through bluetooth.

How do you think the smart watch race will pan out? Will you purchase one if it comes out?
