Notepad, as the name suggests, is a word processor where
you can create text documents in four different
languages–English, Hindi, Marathi, and Gujrati. You
don’t need to switch to other language keyboard; the
software works perfectly with a normal English keyboard.
Characters are mapped such
that the English alphabet on the keyboard matches its
nearest counterpart in that particular language. Most of
the times you can type as you speak. The rule, however,
changes for more complex words that include matraas.
For a slight change in pronunciation for the same
alphabet (as is common in our languages), you can access
the character by pressing Shift + alphabet key. These
documents are saved as text files with different
extensions–TXT (English), HXT (Hindi), MXT
(Marathi), GXT (Gujrati).
This is a
small software that comes on two 3.5" floppies.
During installation, though the fonts are installed by
the program, you need to delete these and copy them
manually from the floppy to C:\Windows\Fonts. Rest of the
software is problem free and convenient to work with.
There is also a virtual keyboard from where you can
key-in the entire document by clicking on various
alphabets.
This multilingual
word-processor offers most of the popular options found
in word-processing packages like page setup, print
document or selected text, find text, increasing and
decreasing fonts, opening multiple files, and tiling or
cascading text files. Howerver, a spell checker is
missing.
The software is
economically priced at Rs 695, and is a handy application
for people who need to create documents in any of the
four languages.
