Western Digital ShareSpace

High on price, but dismal on performance and features, is what can be said for this WD ShareSpace. The ShareSpace is ideal for small workgroups for their data storage solution. The device comes populated with four HDD to give you 8 TB of storage capacity. ShareSpace's features covers all the basics like RAID and volume management. Besides that, it also has event logging facility that sends alerts for a broad range of events like abnormal shutdown, over-heating, fan failure, HDD SMART messages, RAID error information, HHD failure, etc. The USB port and button above that on front panel allows you to automatically copy data from the attached USB storage device. Through the web interface you can also schedule the backup of ShareSpace's content to a USB storage device connected to the front port. It also includes a license to install its WD Anywhere Backup software on upto five client machines.

ShareSpace has a 500 MHz Marvell processor at its core which is partnered with scant 128 MB RAM. The slower data transfer speeds can also be attributed to a slower processor and lower memory capacity.

Thecus

N7700 Pro

The combination of price, performance and features makes Thecus N7700 Pro a winner when compared to QNAP TS 659 Pro. Both models are closely matched on features and price, but on performance front N7700 Pro took the lead.

At its heart, it features an Intel Core2 Duo processor which is partnered with 4GB DDR II RAM, this combination of fast processing and high memory results in faster data transfer rates. Thecus N7700 Pro is a tower-station model that features seven hot-swappable HDD trays, giving you the option to run in a whopping 14 TB storage array. Like N5500, this model also features a dual DOM that ensures flawless operation and maximum uptime. This feature along with dual Gigabit Ethernet ports that can be configured for load-balancing or failover; makes N7700 Pro ideal to be used for mission-critical environments.

N7700 Pro has a handy feature to mount ISO disk images from the NAS's internal storage as individual shares. Like N5500 this can also be used as surveillance station supporting upto 20 IP cameras.

QNAP

TS-659 Pro

Considering that QNAP TS-659 Pro shares same hardware as TS-459 Pro, its no surprise that TS-659 Pro managed to get the same score for performance as TS-459 Pro did. The only difference in features is that TS-659 Pro has six hot swappable HDD bays with which it can offer 12 TB of storage. The unique 'Virtual Disk Drive' feature (also in TS-459 Pro) adds flexibility to expand the NAS capacity. With built-in support for iSCSI initiator, the TS-659 Pro can connect to other iSCSI targets on the network and turn them into virtual disks, which become multiple single volumes on the NAS. Up to 8 virtual disks can be stacked, and TS-659 Pro serves as the storage stack chaining master. The user simply accesses the NAS and gets all iSCSI targets as local storage.

In the front panel, the one-touch copy button can be configured to back up data to or from external hard drives. Two eSATA ports allow for fast transfers from external storage. There are dual Gigabit Ethernet ports that support failover and load balancing, which means both ports can balance network traffic over a single IP address, and in case one fails the other will continue the operation.
