For the third year in a row, IBM comes out tops in notebooks, with HP closing the gap at a close second place. Toshiba, at number three, is quite a bit behind HP. For Dell at fourth position, it’s been a jump of sorts–from fifth position and a UPI of 14% last year to fourth position and a UPI of 33% this year. At fifth position, Wipro is a new entrant in the Users’ Choice Club this year. The other notebook brands cited by the voters but which did not make it to the top five are Acer, Apple, Fujitsu, Asus and Zenith,

in that order.

IBM got most of its votes from enterprises with an IT spend of over Rs one crore a year, while HP’s votes were more or less the same across IT spends. In terms of verticals, telecom gave IBM the maximum votes, while BPO gave most votes to HP.

The biggest reason that voters gave, for wanting to buy IBM notebooks, was that they had used and were satisfied with the product’s performance. For HP, the top reason cited was that it was a good-quality product. IBM got maximum votes from the North zone and HP from the West.

Toshiba got most of its votes from enterprises with an IT spend of over Rs 50 lakh and the regional push came from the South. In terms of verticals, it got most of its votes from BPO. Dell got its big push from the South and from companies with an IT spend of between Rs 50 lakh to Rs one crore. In terms of verticals, the push came from software. Wipro got a nod from companies with an IT spend of between Rs 25 to Rs 50 lakh and in terms of verticals from services.

Of the people not currently using the top four brands, 12% say that they will shift to HP, 9% to Dell and just 6% to winner IBM.

It has been three years in a row for IBM. HP is swiftly catching up. Who will be the winner next year ?
