Nterprise

Branch Office

Nterprise Branch office is a key feature that allows you to connect your branch offices to your head office. This offers you a secure connection between your offices without using a VPN connection. It automatically allocates resources to on-site or mobile users, on demand. The Nterprise branch feature can act as a workgroup NAS appliance for accessing and sharing files over any protocol. All data and services located at the branch office can be backed up at the central office. This is a useful and cost-effective solution and uses Rsync for incremental data backup. Interestingly, Rsync is also a free utility available for both Linux and Windows.

Better Server Consolidation

The new version has a server consolidation utility for consolidating multiple servers into the same tree or eDirectory. Now, you can copy data across volumes within the same eDirectory and also maintain all attributes, ownerships and file-system trustees. You can even move the printer agents from one print-server manager to another printer manger within the tree.

Web Development

Another new feature is the Novell exteNd application server, which provides the complete infrastructure for developing cross platform Web based business applications. Novell exteNd 4.0 works with XML to integrate legacy systems. It also includes Novell exteNd workbench for Web services development environment and supports CORBA, JMS, transaction management and Web Service engines. The OS also has a Virtual Office feature that provides Web-based apps for team groups, for communication. End users can create a virtual group or join existing groups to share resources such as folders and Team calendars. Novell eGuide, a Web-based tool provides quick access to information like name, address, phone/fax, e-mail etc. With this, users can easily search for information stored in

eDirectory.

Other Pluses

NetWare also supports iSCSI. It also supports block storage protocol over IP. The OS also has iManager 2.0, a Web-based management tool to administer and configure the entire eDirectory like associated resources and applications.

Besides this, there’s the DirXML starter pack, which is a component to synchronize user information and resolve directories in mixed environments. It is a data-sharing solution that uses eDirectory to synchronize, transform and distribute information across directories, databases and applications. This is a useful feature, allowing you to integrate heterogeneous computing environments together. There’s also the Netstorage feature, which gives users access their files stored on NetWare from a Web browser.
