The new monochrome printer from HP LaserJet P1108 offers duplex printing and has no buttons except the on/off button, which will rarely be used. It has one input tray and can hold upto 150 sheets at a time. There are two light indicators on the top for power and printing.

It's easy to set up as it has in-built printer drivers, so you can start it and use it straightaway without having to install printer drivers through a DVD. Just connect it to a PC via its USB and you can start printing within minutes. Text print quality is impressive with neat and sharp edges.

LaserJet P1108 boasts of long lasting printer toner quality, which even after five to six hundred printouts remains as good as the first print. It can print upto 17 pages per minute while the first page takes 6-7 sec to shoot.

Other features include fax and telephone and an inbuilt speaker is provided for the same.

The installation was pretty straightforward and easy. Company claims a speed of 18 ppm and in our test we achieved almost same result, which is 17 ppm.

The copier speed was almost the same and the printing quality was also decent. Apart from Windows and Mac, the printer can be installed on Linux. We also tried to scan colored and black and white pages. There we saw some patches at the corner of the scanned black and white pages but color scan was of good quality.

Bottomline: If you need a printer with copier, fax, telephone and scanner then you can consider this printer as an option.

Canon MF5980DW is a mono laser printer that includes wireless connectivity. It is equipped with SEND technology which allows documents to be scanned and saved to USB flash memory, network shared folders and to an email address. It also features duplexing ADF which enables you to scan, print, copy on both the sides of the paper.

The installation was not difficult. An installation disc is provided and you have the choice to install it over USB or through wireless.

The printer was able to print 30 pages in a minute and printing quality was also good. It also has a copier feature which copied 33 pages in a minute. The 5 line LCD display and other buttons on the printer let you copy and scan from the printer itself.

Canon MF8080CW is a laser printer good for small businesses. Apart from printing it has features like fax, copy (B/W, color), and scan. The installation was quite easy. It took about 35 second to print an A4 size color page and the image quality was also good. Its scanning quality is very fine and fast as well. It took 10 seconds to scan a page. The copy quality was also good and in 30 seconds it was able to copy the first page. It has 5-line LCD display which is capable of showing the complete status of the machine.

Bottomline: One of the major drawbacks is the slow printing speed, otherwise the printer performs well.

Epson has launched the latest model of its K series monochrome inkjet printers. Epson K300 AIO Monochrome Inkjet Printer is perfect for a small workplace. Targeted basically at text printing, this printer is ideal for text specific printing environs. The installation of the printer is quite easy, even on a network. To test the printing speed and quality we tried to print a document. It took around 10 seconds to print an A4 size page. It has a flatbed scanner that provides decent scans. One of the features of the K300 is the duplex printing mode. Apart from Windows XP, Vista and 7, it also supports Mac 10.4.11 and later versions.

Bottomline: It is a decent printer for small and medium enterprises but if you need a fax along all the features it already has then you can opt for Panasonic KX-Mb1520.

The MEAP enabled Canon LBP680CX has an added advantage that it enables software developers to develop organizational specific applications for the printer. The printer comes up with 3 CDs containing the drivers. The set up was easy and did not take much time. It also has a 5-line display which makes it easier to operate. The paper tray can accommodate a maximum of 550 pages. The printing quality is also good and it works on on-demand fixing technology for reducing warm up time greatly, because the heater gets heated during printing only. It also allows a user to print directly from the USB device, and supports PDF, JPEG, TIFF and XPS file formats.

Bottomline: Although it is a bit expensive, the on-demand technology and MEAP, and the relatively fast printing make it a good choice.
