The ISI (Intelligent Serial Interface) card is a serial-port expansion card that can add up to eight serial ports to a server. The additional ports can be used for connecting high-speed modems, terminals, or any serial peripheral device. The card claims a sustained data rate of up to 460.8 kbps per port.
The product can work on plenty of OSs, both desktops and servers, and comes with drivers for them. These include Windows 9x/NT/Me/2000, Novell NetWare, SCO Open Server, and Linux. A Multitech ISI Management Utility is there for monitoring data traffic and controlling the modems attached to the ISI card. There’s also a cable (Octopus cable) with eight, 25-pin serial ports extending from one end, and a 78-pin connector on the other, which goes into the card. These eight ports are labeled from 1-8, and as all are 25-pin connectors, you’ll need a converter cable if you have any 9-pin serial device.
To install the card you have to plug it in to a PCI slot and install the drivers from the accompanying CD. The manual also contains a step-by-step installation procedure. During installation Windows detects and creates eight COM ports, and automatically assigns one at random to each port. Priced at Rs 18,950, the card comes with a one-year warranty.
