In 1997 Agricultural Research Information System (AIRS) was conceptualized by
Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. AIRS was built to
address issues of electronic sharing of research data among the scientists of
RAU and other State Agricultural Universities of India. The use of research
information as an educational compliment to PG students of Agricultural
Universities was the another issue in focus
The ARIS evolved into Center for Information Management & Computer
Applications (CIMCA) on account of its enhanced responsibilities of
e-communication, information management and computer applications in wider areas
of agricultural education, research and extension units. CIMCA encountered the
problem of establishing Local Area Network in distantly located functional units
like Colleges, Directorates and Research Centers. This led to establishment of
RAU Wide Area Network that addressed all these issues of data sharing and
interconnection of units.
