'My World' is a unified communication based solution deployed at Reliance
Comm to help PAN-India employees to collaborate with each other more securely
and efficiently. Apart from management of electronic documents, it has other
good features like 'spaces', which extend online work space for the user. This
portal also provides a number of apps for managing and sharing documents and
content like blogs, file repositories, etc. It also has mailing and voice call
functionality. The reason behind implementing a web 2.0 portal is that the
earlier portal lacked a number of functions that are needed for collaboration.
During the process they faced a lot of business as well as technical challenges.
They faced cultural barriers, implementing Single-Sign-On across different
business groups which is required for integrating various applications on “My
World” (more than 100 mail and application servers), converting the
existing legacy applications data model to suit the business reporting engine
using Web 2.0 technology, etc. This implementation has benefited them a lot.
There was 15-20% reduction in training time and costs, 22% reduction in paper
consumption, 10% and reduction in maintenance cost.
End users have also been benefited a lot. They now have a one-stop
customizable platform for all information and communication needs, easy and
better decision making through effective information integration, easy document
sharing, easy accessibility of centralized resources, facilitating project
management with scheduling and tracking projects status, reduced need for IT
support, etc.
