As the name suggests, this solar powered UPS will charge its batteries from sunlight

— Ashok Pandey

The solar-powered portable UPS is compatible with Photovoltaics (PV) modules, which is a method of generating electrical power by employing solar panels composed of a number of solar cells to supply usable solar power. The portable UPS offers affordable options to utilize solar energy.

It looks like any other ordinary UPS at first glance, but it has some amazing features that differentiate it from the herd. The battery and the charging board is fixed under a black metalic shell. The Powersafe Porta-Solar has three LEDs on the front. These LEDs indicate status of different things - charging status, battery status and fault alert. There are other buttons such as 3 USB charger ports, main power switch, CFL on/off switch, 1A/2A charger select switch and one PV input.

At the back, it has 3 CFL output receptacles that allow you to connect CFLs with UPS, 12 VDC output connector that enables you to power-up fan or other equipments apart from other available ports. One external battery connector is also available there, if you want to add extra battery, and AC input connector to charge the UPS using electricity. Surprisingly, it weights only 3 kgs that makes it portable, while the solar module is lightweight but it is large in size.

Power packed performance: The 70W rated UPS has the capability to light up three CFLs and charge three USB devices. Powersafe recommends using a solar panel of at least 24W-30W to charge it with. The review unit comes with a 30W solar panel. It takes quite a long time to be fully charged. Using the solar power, it took around 10 hours 27 minutes to go from zero to full charge. While using the electricity, it took about 8 hours 20 minutes.

The UPS was able to handle 100% load of its capacity and handled it pretty well. It was able to provide battery backup for 5 hours 48 minutes on a full charge while using 15W CFL. The UPS is well-designed and keeps the float voltage to 2.27 volts, which is well-within the limits. It has a fairly wide operating voltage range and doesn’t switch to battery so long as the voltage remains between 115 - 304 volts. The only problem that we came across is that the output voltage varies as per the input. So, if you aren’t using a voltage stabilizer, and if there is voltage fluctuation, it can harm your devices or bulbs.

It can charge three USB devices with a capacity of 2000 mAh battery simultaneously on one full charge, which is quite sufficient. It also gives you the option to choose either 1A or 2A to charge your USB device that makes it compatible with various range of USB devices. But it will run out of power after charging three 2000 mAh USB devices, so you need to recharge the UPS to power it up to charge another device or light a CFL. The good part is that you can increase the capacity of the UPS for longer backup period just by adding an extra battery to it.
