This drive combines a regular 1 TB hard drive with a 120 GB solid-state drive. Earlier, you were required to use two separate drives to achieve the same effect. And this was possible only on desktops where you had space to do so. But this dual drive allows you to get the same effect on the laptop as well.

Fast performance: The 2.5 inch drive is easy to install and is similar to 120 GB SSD in performance. At first glance, it looks like any standard laptop internal drive. It is about 9.5 mm thick and supports SATA 3 (6Gbps) standard, meaning it can work with any laptop and desktop, but not with a ultrabook because of its thickness. You can use it as an external HDD with any PC and Ultrabook as well, and it can be easily installed in any computer as a regular hard drive.

Both, 120 GB SSD and 1TB HDD share single SATA connector, which is something news. In a single drive chassis, you get both HDD and SDD, but it is not a hybrid or SSHD drive as both remain two separate volumes. When you connect the drive with a PC, 120 GB SSD would enable OS installation and once the PC has booted, you need to install the Black2 installer software that will reveal the 1 TB HDD. It presently supports only Windows.

Performance: The 120 GB SSD performs like usual SSDs, once set-up correctly. The 1 TB storage space doesn’t play any role in the system performance, its just a storage data. In our lab tests, the SSD performed typically as entry-level 120 GB SSD. Using the WD dual drive as an external HDD was quite an experience. Out of 1 TB, the entire space is available to the user.

The drive performed so well during the assorted file transfer. It gave us quite impressive results. The read speed of the drive with our 126 GB assorted data was 205 MB/sec using USB 3.0 while with USB 2.0 it was 32 MB/sec. The write speed of the drive was 139 MB/sec using USB 3.0 and 22 MB/sec with USB 2.0. In our test benchmarks such as HD Tune Pro and CrystalDiskMark, it delivered read speeds of 130.7 MB/s and 117.3 MB/s respectively. Combining the SSD and HDD, WD Dual Drive costs Rs 16.06 per GB, which is economical for this drive.
