As the successor to the 830 SSD series, Samsung now has two products: 840 and 840 Pro. These are available in different capacities, from 64 GB to 512 GB.

The 840 Pro uses their fourth generation SSD controller and there are three ARM 9 cores running at 300MHz. The 256GB SSD 840 Pro boasts of 8 x 32 GB NAND devices in front of the PCB. We used a system with Intel Core i7 processor, Intel DX79SI motherboard with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 graphics card and Windows7 OS. In the HD Tune 5.0 benchmark test, it came up with an average transfer rate of 377MB/s along with 0.061 ms access time and 3.0% CPU utilization.

If you compare this score with SanDisk's Ultra Plus 256 GB SSD (reviewed in Apr 2013), the Samsung SSD is marginally ahead. The Ultra Plus scored 353 MB/s. Also, the Samsung SSD is light on power usage as it consumes 0.068W in active mode and 0.042W in idle mode.
