Share Internet Connection

New Update

If you have just one Internet account that you’d like to share across a bunch of machines, then you don’t need to buy a separate proxy server for it. Windows 98 SE has a feature called ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) that lets you do this. The prerequisite for this, of course, is that all your machines must be networked. Take any of the Windows 98 SE machines, and hook up a modem to it. This will be the Internet gateway for the other machines.

To configure ICS, go to Start>Settings>Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs. Go to the Windows Setup tab, and double-click on the Internet tools component. Here, you’ll find an Internet Connecting Sharing check box. Click this and then the OK button. You’ll be asked for your Windows 98 CD. Once installed, it will start a wizard to configure Internet sharing.

Here, you’ll have to choose between two options: Dial-up connection using phone line or ISDN modem and High speed connection using ADSL or Ethernet. Choose the one you have. We chose the first one as we had a regular analog dial-up connection. The wizard also creates a client configuration disk for you, which you can use to configure the other Windows machines that will be sharing this Internet connection. After a restart, the host machine is ready for Internet sharing.

At the client end, insert the floppy you just created, and run the icsclset.exe file from it. Now fire up your Web browser and open any website. If the host

machine is connected to the Internet, you should be able to open the site.
