In retail business, continuous training of employees is an important
requirement in the fast changing business world to achieve multiple skills. Also
in most retail businesses, products and technologies keep changing regularly. To
meet this changing needs by upgrading skills of existing employees, Shoppers
Stop wanted a blended mode of training, involving both face-to-face and
e-learning. Shoppers Stop decided to implement a platform which could deliver
training online, track and test the learners' progress and allows analysis on
the collected data. They finally chose an open source LMS (Learning Management
System) called Moodle.
Moodle is an open source LMS that enables the creation of flexible and
engaging online learning. It is also SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference
Model) compliant, -the de facto industry standard for e-learning
interoperability.
With this solution in place, employees can now learn at their own pace and
from their own locations. Also all the tests and assessments are centrally
controlled by the HR team from the head office, with no need of printing test
papers, sending them across to the different locations and then manually
correcting and publishing the results. Different kinds of assessments have been
conducted using this platform, like, Product Knowledge Assessments, Retail
selling Skills and SOP assessments Shopper's stop believes that associates who
have been trained and certified perform their job functions efficiently and
effectively, leading to happier and satisfied customers and a resultant increase
in sales. Reduced travelling and administrative costs for training also add to
the returns. We foresee that the initial cost would be recovered in 2 years
time.
