Tata Liebert PSA-700-230

A good performer with a rich set of features

When we subjected this UPS to the

"true" rating test, viz 700 VA, it gave an overload

signal. However, it managed to sustain the load. The UPS takes very

little time to switch over, and gives a backup for seven minutes at

80 percent of its rated load. Its switchover voltage range is really

good, though the output voltage does drop to 196 V. This was one of

the few UPSes that corrected voltage surges within one half-cycle,

which is very good. The price is inclusive of software, but the

latter has to be downloaded from their Website. It comes with a

two-year warranty. Among other things, it was one of the most

feature-rich UPSes in the shootout, coming with comprehensive

documentation and controls. Though the price is high, this UPS is a

very good choice considering its performance and features.

Deltron Intelligent

A well-priced UPS with long backup time

The Deltron

packs in two 12 V 7 AH batteries, thereby giving a long backup time

of 12 minutes. The other area where it tops is price. At Rs 4,800,

it was only Rs 200 more than the least priced one in the shootout.

The UPS comes with good documentation, and a comprehensive set of

indicators on the front panel, that, among other things, show

battery charge level and overload. The UPS could do with better

surge protection–as it switches to battery when the input voltage

is high. This is acceptable, but it would be better if it could

correct surges while remaining on mains. Also, it could not lift the

full rated load, managing only 80 percent.

TVS StartUPS 500J

The performance and features of this UPS make up for its slightly high price

This was the

most feature-rich UPS of the lot–compact, good documentation,

comprehensive set of indicators, and price inclusive of software.

For a 500 VA UPS, it’s slightly expensive compared to others, but

the performance and features make up for that. The StartUPS gave a

backup of four minutes, and switched to battery when handling surge.

This was also able to lift 80 percent of its rated 500 VA. However,

overall, a great buy.
