With the aim of making data available from a centralized location, United
India Insurance set up a 2000 square feet server room in its Chennai head office
to house the data centre in addition to a separate room for VPN WAN
connectivity. The data centre which went on stream on June 28, 2007, addressed
few of the many challenges that are synonymous with insurance and banking
companies-consolidating information scattered across 1000 or more servers
located at various branch and operating offices, different versions of same apps
running across these servers, and a need for higher reliability, security.
As part of the project, the insuring customers and the public can have access
to the product information, status of their policy, claims, and can interact
online for all queries. Online issuance of policies can also be processed and
instant responses can be provided to the customer. The company also plans to
have a disaster recovery site at Hyderabad in the months to come. In short,
United Insurance has attempted to re-create a CORE banking model for the
insurance industry.
