Wacom’s Graphire Tablet

This tablet, for graphics designers and illustrators, comes with a cordless mouse that needs no batteries and doesn’t have a ball. The two buttons and a finger wheel on the mouse are programmable. You can scroll using the finger wheel, and customize the buttons according to the application in use.

There’s also a pressure-sensitive pen with a programmable ‘duo switch’ and a built-in eraser. This has two buttons that can be used for left or right click. You also get a removable pen stand and a transparent overlay with the tablet. The back side of the pen can be used as an eraser, and you can adjust the sensitivity of the pen tip and the eraser.

The tablet size is 8.2” x 8.4” x 0.4”. Its active area is the mapped representation of your computer screen where each point on it corresponds to a point on your screen. You can customize the work area depending on your needs–either use a full display or a just portion of the active area.

The Graphire is compatible with Windows 98, Me, 2000, iMac (Mac OS 8.5 or later), and PowerMac (Mac OS 8.0 or later). Installing it is easy as it connects to a USB port. It comes with two diskettes–one has the drivers and the other includes four programs for graphics professionals. They are Corel’s Painter Classic (which gives you tools for sketches, and oil painting), Adobe ActiveShare, Sensiva and Pen Office. You can use Pen Office with the pen to sign your name or add handwritten notes.

Remember to handle the pen with great care; if its is damaged, you will need to shell an additional Rs 4,000 to replace it. The 4x5 Graphire tablet is available for
