New Update

In the "Dive Into Mobile" conference that happened in New York, the CEO of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, has said that the popular Android & iOS app has over 200 million monthly active users. Currently, Twitter has 200 milion montly active users. While the app was initially free in 2009, it is now being phased to an annual $0.99 subscription model. Currently, it costs that much on iOS but is still free on Android.

According to the conference, the service generates an average of 8 billion inbound messages and 12 billion outbound messages per day. When asked about whether Whatsapp is in talks to sell the app to Google, Koum said that "Our goal is to build a sustainable, independent company. We want to build a business". Currently, Whatsapp has a policy against running ads, and he reinforced during the conference that they do not plan to run ads on the app. He also denied that Whatsapp will be turned into a platform that will support games, advertising and other aspects such as social networking.

Given the exponential growth of the service, it will be interesting to see if it draws users away from popular social platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, or if will serve as a complimentary service.
