While comparing a 1080p 12 MP camcorder against a 720p 16 MP one, I am thinking of buying the 720p one with the higher MP because its file size is half that of the former. Can you advise which is better of the two? Higher resolution, but lower MP, or lower resolution but higher MP?

You have confused a number of factors. The megapixel rating of a camera refers to the sensor, not the recording. 1080p is a frame size of 2 MP and 720p is a frame size of 1 MP. Notice that this is just a fraction of the MP rating for either camera. The 12 or 16 MP resolution would only be effective for still photographs, not video. So you need to decide which is more important to you, videos or photos. The MP rating of the camera really has nothing to do with the quality of video. Video quality is primarily a factor of data rate that is the number you should use to compare camcorders.
