success of movie 'AVATAR', the 3D buzz has further multiplied. Acer Aspire
5738DG is yet another

user 3D experience on their desks. The only problem with this laptop and similar
products is that they require specialized glasses on your eyes, which is quite
annoying.
Before writing about performance and 3D, let's start with
ergonomics of this laptop. It houses a full keyboard which is tactile and
responsive with dedicated multimedia keys including a key which can be
configured to open any file as well as dedicated keys for volume, Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth and the Acer Backup Manager. 5738DG comes with multitouch touchpad
which is average to use, but positioning of biometric scanner between the mouse
key is bit annoying. Overall build quality of this laptop is quite solid but
with a weight of 2.8 Kg, moving around with 5738DG would be tiring. Also,
battery backup of 1hour and 38 minutes makes it impractical. An interesting
feature is the screen-lock which helps secure the 15.6 inch screen while the
laptop is closed. 5738DG is bundled with 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

The most important feature of this laptop is its 3D
capability and the same is achieved using Acer CineCrystal 1366 x 768 TFT
display with integrated TriDef 3D screen with polarizing glasses. Perception of
depth is created by superimposing two images of an object from slightly
different perspective on screen through different polarizing filters and then
when user watches this image through polarized glass (that also acts as
polarized filters). Each filter passes only that light that is similarly
polarized and blocks the light polarized in opposite direction; due to this each
eye sees different image which creates a 3D effect. 5738DG also comes with
TriDef suite of software containing the TriDef Media Player which will play your
movies back in 3D, while TriDef Ignition enables 2D to 3D conversion.
In fact, we were able to generate 3D experience on other
machines using TriDef Ignition and polarized glasses, though experience was not
as rich as that of 5738DG.
Now that we know about features of this notebook, let us
move to performance. To check this, we carried out three tests to check
graphical, overall and battery performance of 5738DG. While Intec Battery Mark
1.1 was used to test battery backup, we used 3D Mark 06 to check graphical
capability. 5738DG in build Radeon 4570 graphics was able to give 3003 3DMarks.
This result is highest when compared with laptops within
40K to 50K (ref. to notebook shootout of Sep 09). For testing overall
performance of this laptop we used PC Mark 05, result of 4769 PCMarks is again
on higher side when compared with the same category.
Bottomline: With such a competitive price and great
3D experience, this laptop is winner in both performance and features, but
battery backup is a serious concern.
