Top tennis players started vying for Wimbledon, the most coveted tennis trophy, on Monday. Artificial intelligence, though, which is replacing comments this year, is something new this time. For better or worse, the TV coverage of this year's Wimbledon competition might shift significantly.
The All England Lawn Tennis Club has announced that this year's Championships will mark the launch of new AI-powered commentary at Wimbledon. Wimbledon intends to deploy AI technology to provide text and audio commentary on its app and website.
How exactly does the AI commentary work?
The feature analyzes ball tracking data, player locations, and the kinds of shots being taken on the court using IBM's Watson AI platform. The AI then uses the information to create commentary.
A generative AI model with diverse sentence structures and vocabulary was used to create engaging and informative narration using foundation language models. According to IBM's official statement, the All England Club and IBM iX specialists worked together to train AI in tennis language.
Previous AI commentary
The AI-powered commentary will only be available for post-match highlights on Wimbledon.com and the app, not for the entire coverage. After the first day of play on Monday, the first round of AI commentary will be available. In spite of the fact that it isn't whenever man-made intelligence first has been utilized for analysis in sports. AI commentary was used during the US Masters golf tournament in April.
The viewers have the option of turning the commentary on or off. If they would rather hear the sounds of the court, like the ball hitting a racket and the cheers of the crowd, they can do so.
This year, tennis received an additional brand-new feature known as AI draw analysis. A statistic indicating the likelihood of each player progressing to the singles final is calculated using artificial intelligence.
The player's draw favorability rating is determined by a number of factors, including potential future opponents and the player's position in relation to their rivals. Fans of tennis will be able to uncover surprises and anomalies in the singles draw with this unique insight, which may not be apparent from player rankings alone.
