New Update

The stage is set. 3G is hitting the Indian terrain when the mobile subscription is approximately 700 million, the network coverage is nation-wide and 3G ready mobile devices are available at as low as 3.5k. Three of the four key 3G drivers, as analyzed from the past high diffusion rates of this next-gen wireless technology in other countries, are well placed. NTT DoCoMo's I-mode launch in Japan was one of the most successful 3G launches in the world where all the four drivers were well timed and placed for the technology to pitch in. In the Indian scenario too, the fourth and the actual driver is going to be critical for direct consumers and especially the enterprises —the 3G applications!

3G Applications for enterprises

Being a high speed broadband technology, high speed Internet access, video calling, swift movie downloads and buffer speeds, high speed mobile video games, etc are just a few of the apps of 3G when it comes to personal usage. But it does make a whole lot of sense for enterprise too.

1. Access to critical enterprise apps

Some specific modules of the ERP and CRM solutions can be made accessible on mobiles. This can save time critical action items from being delayed. The solution providers have already shown interest in 3G. Oracle offers iPhone 3G applications that are related to the E-Business suite, which comprises of Oracle Business Approvals for Managers, Oracle CRM On Demand Integration Pack for Oracle E-Business Suite, Maintenance Workbench for Oracle Enterprise Asset Management, etc. A free application called Citrix Receiver for Mobile lets a mobile device user access an app regardless of the OS of the app.

2. Video conferencing on the go

Meetings and conferences can no longer get delayed as one can connect to the video conference session using a 3G enabled phone. Enterprise video conferencing solution like the one provided by Mirian integrates 3G handsets with H.323, SIP and H3.20 video conferencing networks through a 3G gateway. It gives its users the option to even receive presentation slides sent via data video channel routed to their handsets. Interactive voice response menu and live webcast features can make it a killer 3G app.

3. Mobile commerce

M-Commerce is going to bring paradigm shift from e-Commerce. Thanks to the 3G network which overcomes the shortcomings of the existing 2G/2.5G M-Commerce models. The bandwidth again definitely makes it edge over its predecessor. Banking transactions, online payments, online booking, fund transfers, etc are a few of the applications that 3G enabled handsets and 3G networks should be handled with ease with due respect to the security issues which need to be checked on. Airtel's m-check is just one such app which is accessible currently even on 2.5G networks.

4. Mobile advertising

Mobile advertising is another point of interest for enterprises across all industrial verticals. The 16000 cr+ Indian Mobile VAS market is already expecting a boost with 3G. Concept of 'mobisodes' (mobile+episodes) from various media channels is already on the cards. Clients have the option to advertise their product in a specific geo-area and live stream their products .

5. VoIP

With 3G rolling in, mobile VoIP can be used which is even better than 'close-user-group' concept especially for the top tier management which move across countries. Internet Telephony Service Providers provide mobile client software to the user which makes use of high speed 3G networks. An application like Fling can just facilitate you the same and it is available on the App store for iPhones, OVI stores for Nokia handsets and also support Android platforms.
