Users may now respond to emails with emojis thanks to a new feature that Google has added to Gmail. The functionality is now only available on Android, but it will soon also be available on iOS and the web. Five basic emojis will be available for users to choose from when expressing their emotions.
Emoji reactions won't function, though, in some circumstances, such as when using a third-party email service or if the message is encrypted. A link to view the response may be included in an email notice sent to recipients who do not have a Gmail account.
How to add emoji and remove Emoji?
At the bottom of the email, users will see an "Add Emoji Reaction" button with a selector that offers the usual options. The button is next to the three-dot menu. Tapping it will open a small menu where users can choose from five default themes. When an emoticon is selected, it appears in the reaction bar below the message.
You can long tap on an emoji to see who sent it. Behind the scenes, you can remove the emoji reaction after adding it as part of the existing download feature (5-30 seconds).
To remove an emoticon reaction, tap the Undo notification at the bottom of the message. You can only change the "Unsend" period on your computer.
User with an old version of the Gmail app
If the person you're sending an emoji reaction to doesn't have a Gmail address, they can receive an email with a "
- Use an older version of the Gmail app
- Disable chat
- Use a third-party email solution such as Apple Mail or Microsoft Outlook.
- Use a work or school account.
Other situations where emoji reactions won't work include:
- You are in BCC.
- You have already sent more than 20 replies to the same letter.
- The message is encrypted using client-side encryption
- The sender has a custom reply address.
