Bangalore, India: With mobile operating systems vying for dominance in the marketplace, they are not just being stuck to smartphones. With Samsung and Nikon’s latest entries in the digital camera space, Android may capture the niche market of photography enthusiasts who want to share their life in pictures.

We compare some of the main features offered by the two Android-powered cameras.

Camera & Form

Since they are primarily point-and-shoots, the capture capabilities are essential. While both boast 16 MP capability, the Galaxy Camera boasts 21x zoom while the Nikon only has 10x zoom.  Galaxy’s lens delivers an equivalent 23-481mm capability, while Nikon has a lens of 25-250mm capability. Both of them are able to record 1080p HD video at 30fps.

While the Galaxy offers a 4.8-inch screen (1280 * 720 resolution ), the Nikon camera offers a smaller 3.5-inch screen (854 * 480 resolution ).

Both cameras come in sleek and light form factors.

Functionality

The Galaxy Camera has an advantage in this department as it runs Android 4.1(Jelly Bean) but the Coolpix camera runs Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). While Nikon has its own Expeed C2 processor in the camera, the Galaxy camera is equipped with its impressive quad-core Exynos processor.

The Coolpix has Wi-Fi connectivity but the Galaxy Camera has both Wi-Fi and 3G/4G connectivity. This is a disadvantage for the Nikon entry, as consumers will be eager to instantaneously share photos while they are outside snapping constantly.

The Galaxy camera also takes the cake for voice commands, allowing you to command it to zoom in/out, set timers and even share your pics. It’s also useful to have your favorite apps, such as Instagram and Facebook on your camera to instantly upload photos.

However, one catch with the Galaxy camera is that it lacks GPS, which the Nikon camera supports, so you won’t be able to geotag your pics on the Galaxy camera.

Value & Pricing

While the Nikon Coolpix is selling at US$349.95, the Galaxy Camera is set to be released within the next few weeks in the US, and pricing details have not been disclosed yet. Reports have carried that the Galaxy camera will be released in India sometime in November.

If the pricing of the Galaxy camera is around that of Nikon’s, there is no doubt it will provide the better value for money, due to the glut of features that it offers compared to the Coolpix.
