With increasing virus threats, it’s no wonder that most people in our survey stressed on good quality as the most important factor when choosing anti-virus software. The second most important criterion for choosing an anti-virus package turned out to be brand popularity.

The most preferred anti-virus software that people intended to buy this year was none other than Norton, which has been the winner for the past two years. Not only that, but also most people who opted for Norton chose it because it’s a well-known brand. McAfee was the runner up for the third consecutive time, and was behind by a wide margin. What’s more bad news for McAfee is that this gap seems to be increasing. Norton drew most of its support from homes and SMEs, while McAfee was strong in the corporate and software companies. Competition in this segment is going to be fierce, with companies like Trend Micro, Sophos, and Command anti-virus tightening their belts.
