Idle inventory, be it of raw materials or finished goods, is dreaded by all
shop floor supervisors. One of the major reasons for this is the lack of
co-ordination amongst the various blocks of the logistics chain-right from the
procurement of raw materials to delivery of finished goods. Process automation
goes a long way in reducing the mess by arming supervisors with information at
all critical checkpoints.
The company handles more than 200 trucks a day and controlling their
whereabouts was a nightmare. So, it decided to automate its logistics operations
through a tighter coupling with the already deployed SAP ERP backbone and added
facilities such as sending SMSes to transporters to send trucks, including
transporter freight contract management, road permit management indents.
The solution integrates complex packages such as SAP, APO, DOMINO and SMS
gateways. An important benefit has been the immaculate control over the truck
ordering process and in minimizing the hold time of the vehicle inside the
factory. Another benefit has been the automation of Stock Transfer Orders and
Delivery Challan generation.
