Some older iPhone models could receive USB-C ports.
The code for tvOS 17 beta 5 contained this information.
It's possible that two iPhone 14 series devices will be released again with USB Type-C connectors.
Since the iPhone 5, all iPhones include a Lightning port. This may soon alter, though, as rumors and leaks suggest that Apple may eventually abandon its proprietary connector in favor of USB Type-C for the forthcoming iPhone 15 series. It turns out, however, that in addition to the iPhone models expected in 2023, a few earlier models may also be redesigned with USB-C connectors installed in instead of Lightning ports.
Older iPhones to get a USB-C charging port
Along with the iPhone 15 models, Apple may bring USB-C charging ports to several older iPhones. Aaron revealed this on X (formerly Twitter), an Apple developer and writer. While analyzing the TVOS 17 beta 5 code, Aaron discovered two iPhone models that were not previously present in previous betas.
Additionally, the two models are said to differ from the four iPhone 15 references found in older tvOS software versions. The new iPhone models iPhone14.1 and iPhone14.9 in the software are rated as the regular iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 plus, but with USB-C charging ports.
Why does Apple offer USB-C ports on older iPhones?
There is currently no certainty that Apple will revamp older iPhones and offer Type-C instead of Lightning ports. However, if the report turns out to be true, Apple's decision to comply with European Union regulations to offer USB-C ports on all devices sold in the region could be a smart move. In 2020, a law was passed forcing companies to adopt Type C ports. If reports are anything to go by, the Cupertino giant will switch to USB-C ports starting with the iPhone 15 series, mainly due to strict EU rules and regulations.
iPhone 15 USB-C Port and Charging Details
Additionally, according to recent rumors, the iPhone 15 could have a USB-C female connector with a Thunderbolt/USB4 Retimer chip. This USB-C switch is consistent with earlier rumors that the iPhone 15 will offer 15W wireless fast charging. It was first noted that USB-C would replace Lightning in February.
